On a chilly night on the last day of April of 2016, the people of eastern Long Island were treated to top quality acoustic music at Stephen Talkhouse. The duo of Gary Lucas and Jann Klose presented a polished set that featured songs off of their new CD release "Stereopticon". They sure had a big sound for two people! Gary showcased his years of playing experience working with musicians such as: Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley, Lou Reed and many others. His fingerstyle guitar playing filled the room with beautiful runs, expensive chords, and catchy hooks while Jann was adding soaring vocals. Jann's amazing singing range is one of the reasons he has worked with musicians known for vocals like: Renaissance, Hall and Oates, The Strawbs, and more. They opened the evening with four straight songs off of the new album "Let No One Come Between Us", "Walking and Talking", "Take Your Medicine", and "Well of Loneliness". The audience was singing and clapping along when a nice surprise happened. They segued "Take Your Medicine" into a version of "Kiss" by Prince. It was a nice gesture of respect. At this point, the boys each put on a three song solo set. Jann went first and showed us that he can play the guitar as well as sing. During his set he explained how he met Gary at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. He finished his mini-set with a Tim Buckley song and the ending was mesmerizing - with beautiful high-note vocals resonating out in the Amagansett evening. Now it was Gary's turn - and he didn't disappoint. His three song set had amazing guitar inflections. His 1943 Gibson J-45 sure looked like it had seen a lot of work. He explained that he uses all different tunings while he plays. When they resumed as a duo, Jann introduced the lyricist Dan Beck who had helped with many of the songs on the album. They proceeded to perform a real nice version of "Jewel Julia" which Dan had written the Lyrics to. Jann was telling the audience about the various social media outlets to follow the act and he said, "Please like us". He then joked to Dan to write a song "Please Like Us". Gary went on to explain that the next song was not an easy song to sing and they nailed the Jeff Buckley song "Grace" (Wait in the Fire). People who live in the New York area are not going to forget "Superstorm Sandy" anytime soon. "Mary Magdalene" is a song written for the people in Breezy Point and it was a nice gesture to the local "Lawnguylanders". "It was the first song they recorded for the album", Jann explained. They finished up the evening with "Nobody's Talking". The cozy audience asked for one more song and befitting to the fact that the rain held out, they played "Fair Weather". After the show, everyone got to meet Gary and Jann at a CD signing area. It was a wonderful evening of music.
